Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to extend the China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation, underscoring their commitment to enhancing political trust and strategic coordination. This decision came amid global uncertainties and was announced during their meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, coinciding with Putin’s two-day state visit to China. The leaders signed a joint statement to further their comprehensive strategic partnership and endorsed 20 cooperation agreements across various sectors, including the economy, trade, education, and technology.
Marking the 30th anniversary of their strategic partnership and the 25th anniversary of their treaty, both leaders emphasized the historical significance of their bilateral relations. Xi highlighted that the partnership has reached unprecedented levels, offering a model for major-country relations. He stressed the importance of adhering to the treaty’s principles of non-alliance and non-confrontation and called for strengthening political mutual trust and strategic communication. The bilateral trade has shown significant progress, exceeding $200 billion for three consecutive years, with a 20% increase in trade in early 2026.
Both countries emphasized their roles as permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, advocating for a multipolar world and opposing unilateralism and hegemonism. Xi and Putin expressed their intent to uphold international law and the UN Charter while addressing global challenges through frameworks like the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS. They also discussed the critical situation in the Middle East, calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and continued negotiations to stabilize the region.
During their talks, Xi and Putin highlighted the need for deeper cooperation in various fields, including trade, investment, energy, and technology, aiming to create new growth engines. They called for enhanced cultural exchanges and public support to strengthen bilateral ties. Additionally, both countries announced the extension of their visa-free policies, fostering closer people-to-people connections.
