Google is gearing up to enhance its Google Maps service in South Korea by introducing comprehensive navigation capabilities, including turn-by-turn directions. This development follows South Korea’s conditional approval allowing the export of high-precision map data. To support this expansion, Google is actively seeking a senior Strategic Partnerships Development Manager based in Seoul. This new role will involve collaboration with Korean businesses, public institutions, and technology partners, as part of Google’s strategy to establish a local team dedicated to advancing its Maps service in the region.
Currently, Google Maps in South Korea offers features such as place listings, reviews, and public transit information. However, it lacks the turn-by-turn driving or walking navigation that is commonly available in other regions. The forthcoming expansion aims to position Google Maps more competitively against established local services like Naver Map and Kakao Map. This move comes after South Korea granted Google the right to export high-precision map data in February, albeit with specific conditions. Previous attempts had been denied due to national security concerns.
