Korean Basketball Achieves Historic Asian Games Success Amid Domestic Development Challenges

Korean basketball has achieved notable success at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, securing medals in all four of its events across both men’s and women’s disciplines. This achievement comes amidst ongoing challenges in maintaining the sport’s popularity and developing domestic talent.

The men’s 5×5 basketball team ended a 12-year title drought by defeating Japan 67-57 in the final, while the men’s 3×3 team claimed Korea’s first Asian Games gold in the discipline with a 19-10 victory over Qatar. The women’s teams also performed strongly, with the 3×3 team earning a bronze medal after defeating Thailand 21-8, marking Korea’s first medal in the event, and the 5×5 team reaching the final following a significant 85-80 win against China in the semifinals.

This recent success provides a boost for Korean basketball, which has faced difficulties in attracting and developing talent. The Korean Basketball League’s 2025-26 season recorded 811,185 spectators, the highest in nine seasons, though this number is still below the 1.2 million record set in the 2013-14 season. The sport relies heavily on a limited pool of school and university players, with 2,351 registered student-athletes, in contrast to Japan’s larger basketball system.

Korea’s achievements at the Asian Games have been bolstered by increased international exposure and structured preparation, particularly for the 3×3 team, which engaged in both domestic tournaments and international competitions prior to the Games.

Despite the medal haul, basketball officials and analysts emphasize that further investment is needed in player development, international competition, domestic leagues, and training infrastructure to sustain progress. The women’s teams, in particular, face challenges in maintaining sufficient player numbers for full 5×5 training sessions.
