Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed concern over the United States’ decision to pause the implementation of new sanctions against Russia, cautioning that it could lead to an escalation in the conflict with Ukraine. Zelenskyy criticized the move by the Trump administration as potentially emboldening Russian President Vladimir Putin to intensify military actions against Ukraine.
The proposed sanctions, which have been put on hold for 60 days, targeted Russia’s energy sector, financial institutions, and oil transportation network. They also included provisions for imposing tariffs of up to 100% on major importers of Russian oil, such as China and India. The Trump administration’s decision to delay these measures is reportedly aimed at assessing their impact on the global economy and U.S. economic interests.
Zelenskyy argued that easing economic pressure on Russia might undermine efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict, urging the U.S. to reevaluate its decision. He also called on European nations to engage diplomatically with Russia to maintain pressure. The suspension of sanctions has been welcomed by Russian officials but has raised concerns in Kyiv about Washington’s commitment to maintaining a firm stance against Moscow.
Amid these developments, Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure ahead of the winter season. Ukrainian officials report that Russian strikes have damaged more than 15 major electricity generation and transmission facilities, raising fears about potential power shortages and the impact on essential services in Ukrainian cities.
The heightened scale of these attacks is exerting additional pressure on Ukraine’s air defense systems, which are struggling to intercept missiles and drones effectively. Zelenskyy has called for continued international support to protect critical infrastructure and civilian populations from ongoing hostilities.
Furthermore, Zelenskyy voiced concerns about restrictions on Starlink satellite internet services used by Ukrainian forces, noting that such limitations are disrupting military operations, including those involving drones. The situation underscores the growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv over strategies for ending the war, with Zelenskyy emphasizing the necessity of sustained pressure on Russia to achieve lasting peace.
