South Korean President Calls for Dialogue Amid US Alliance Tensions

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has emphasized the importance of prioritizing national interests in foreign policy amid ongoing tensions with the United States. Speaking at a Cabinet meeting, Lee underscored that while the South Korea–United States alliance remains crucial, it is natural for allies to have disagreements that should be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy.

Lee highlighted the necessity for South Korea to conduct its diplomacy with confidence as a sovereign nation, while simultaneously working to bolster cooperation with Washington and other key global powers. His comments come in the wake of reported friction between Seoul and Washington over issues such as intelligence-sharing arrangements, visa delays, and communication challenges with senior US officials. These tensions have sparked debate within South Korea, with opposition politicians expressing concerns over the status of bilateral relations.

South Korean Ambassador to the United States Kang Kyung-wha acknowledged the difficulties in establishing high-level communication with the White House. However, she noted that discussions between relevant agencies had made progress on addressing intelligence-related concerns. Despite these challenges, President Lee remains firm that the alliance with the United States is a central pillar of South Korea’s diplomatic efforts.

Lee’s remarks reflect a broader perspective that while countries may not always share identical interests, they must manage disagreements without allowing them to undermine broader relations. By maintaining engagement and open dialogue, Lee believes South Korea can protect its national interests while continuing to strengthen its strategic alliances.
