India is advancing its plans to procure an additional five S-400 Triumf air defense systems from Russia, as Moscow has submitted a cost proposal to initiate negotiations with New Delhi. The acquisition will be finalized after the Cabinet Committee on Security approves the price and the Finance Ministry gives its clearance. This move comes as India is set to complete its existing contract for five S-400 systems, which was signed in 2018 for $5.43 billion, with the final system expected to be delivered by November 2026.
The addition of these systems aims to bolster India’s air defense capabilities, especially in the eastern sector facing China. The S-400 systems have already demonstrated their value in India’s defense operations, notably during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, where their performance further justified expanding India’s fleet. This strategic enhancement is seen as crucial in maintaining a robust defense posture in the region.
In parallel, India is contemplating the potential purchase of Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft. Although the Indian Air Force has shown interest in the Russian proposal, particularly with China’s deployment of J-20 stealth fighters in Tibet, no decision has been made yet regarding this acquisition. The ongoing defense discussions between India and Russia continue to explore this possibility.
The proposed S-400 deal is expected to be a significant topic in broader India-Russia defense dialogues, especially with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming visit to India for the BRICS summit in September. This visit could further cement defense ties between the two nations, as both countries seek to enhance their strategic partnership.
