EU Extends Sanctions, Drops Two Russian Oligarchs from List

The European Union has decided to remove Russian billionaires Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from its sanctions list, while simultaneously extending sanctions on nearly 3,000 individuals and entities in connection with Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This decision, which underscores the complex diplomatic landscape within the EU, was made as member states faced a deadline to renew the sanctions framework, which mandates unanimous approval from all 27 member states.

The removal of Usmanov and Fridman came after requests from France and Luxembourg, respectively. This move has attracted criticism from Ukraine, which remains opposed to easing sanctions on the two prominent businessmen. Despite these removals, the EU continues to target Russian President Vladimir Putin, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and other senior officials, as well as Russian banks and energy companies tied to the country’s defense sector.

In a notable shift, the EU has opted to extend the current sanctions for a duration of 36 months, instead of the typical six-month renewal period. This change aims to enhance stability and predictability within the sanctions regime, providing a more consistent approach to the EU’s stance against Russia’s military actions.

The EU is also preparing additional sanctions directed at individuals and organizations linked to Russia’s military-industrial complex, further demonstrating the bloc’s commitment to maintaining pressure on Moscow. This ongoing effort highlights the EU’s strategic approach to addressing the geopolitical tensions resulting from the conflict in Ukraine.
