South Korea has decided to extend its reduced tariff program for importing Taiwanese fruits like bananas, pineapples, and mangoes, with the new deadline set for August 15. This program, initially aimed at stabilizing food prices, significantly cuts the import duties from 30% to just 5%. Originally planned to conclude at the end of June, the extension now aligns with Taiwan’s peak mango export season.
The decision to prolong the tariff-relief initiative is welcomed by Taiwan’s Ministry of Agriculture, which sees it as a boon for Taiwanese fruit exports and a means to satisfy the consumer demand in South Korea. Officials emphasize the strategic timing, which coincides with Taiwan’s mango harvest and precedes the full supply of domestic mango production in South Korea.
The Ministry further communicated its ongoing efforts to bolster the international sale of Taiwanese mangoes through various measures. These include quality improvement initiatives, promotional campaigns, and collaborations with retailers across global markets. Such efforts are part of a broader strategy to maintain and increase the global footprint of Taiwanese mangoes.
This year, Taiwanese mango exports have demonstrated robust performance, with South Korea remaining a significant market for these fruits. The extension of the tariff reduction is expected to further cement South Korea as a key destination for Taiwanese mangoes, supporting the island’s agricultural export sector during a crucial period.
