Vietnam Vows to Bolster ASEAN-Russia Strategic Partnership Efforts

Vietnam is playing a pivotal role in enhancing ASEAN’s collaboration with Russia, as demonstrated by the recent ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit, which celebrated 35 years of dialogue between the two regions. During the summit, Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung emphasized Vietnam’s significant contributions to its success, highlighting the country’s efforts to reinforce ASEAN’s central position and bolster the strategic partnership with Russia.

The Vietnamese delegation, led by Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, focused on promoting dialogue, fostering cooperation, resolving disputes peacefully, and adhering to international law. Vietnam proposed expanding collaboration in crucial areas such as energy, trade, transportation connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These initiatives align with the summit’s new frameworks, which aim to strengthen ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, with energy emerging as a key component of this partnership.

Vietnam further showcased its commitment to future regional cooperation by announcing that it will host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027. This move underscores Vietnam’s dedication to fostering long-term collaboration between ASEAN and Russia. On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which both leaders reiterated their commitment to deepening the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The discussions between Prime Minister Hưng and President Putin centered on broadening cooperation in various sectors, including energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transportation. The outcomes of the summit are expected to reinforce ASEAN–Russia relations, enhance regional stability, and open new avenues for economic growth and cooperation across Eurasia.
