LG Innotek and TDK Collaborate to Enhance Robot Vision and Touch Sensors

LG Innotek is joining forces with Japan’s TDK to advance the development of sophisticated vision and tactile sensing modules, which are crucial for robotics and physical AI technologies. This collaboration marries LG Innotek’s expertise in optical and precision engineering with TDK’s cutting-edge sensor innovations to enhance robotic capabilities.

The first major outcome of this partnership is a vision sensing module, anticipated to be released in 2027, which will incorporate an inertial sensor. This module is designed to integrate visual, motion, direction, and auditory data, providing robots with a more comprehensive understanding of their environment. Such an enhancement aims to mitigate image distortion commonly caused by movement, thereby improving the robots’ interaction with their surroundings.

In parallel, the companies are working on a tactile sensing module that aims to emulate the sensory functions of human skin. Scheduled for completion in 2027 alongside the vision module, this tactile system will allow robots to perceive touch and pressure through various parts of their anatomy, such as hands, arms, and bodies. This innovation is expected to significantly enhance the tactile sensitivity of robots, equipping them with human-like touch capabilities.

LG Innotek views this partnership as a strategic move to bolster its presence in the expanding robotics market. By broadening its range of AI sensing technologies—which includes cameras, lidar, radar, and tactile sensors—the company aims to solidify its role as a leader in the field.
