Russia Issues Warning to Japan on US Missile Systems in Kyushu

Russia has issued a formal protest against Japan’s decision to deploy U.S.-made Typhon medium-range missile systems on Kyushu, a southern island of Japan, citing concerns over regional security. The Russian Foreign Ministry communicated its objections earlier this month, warning that the missile systems could destabilize peace in the area.

The protest was delivered through a note, urging Japan to reconsider and remove the missile systems. Russia emphasized its concerns about the potential threat these systems pose to regional stability and called upon Japan to take the matter seriously. The issue was also discussed in a meeting between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko and Japanese Ambassador Akira Muto in Moscow.

This diplomatic dispute occurs amid ongoing tensions between Russia and Japan, which include a territorial conflict over the southern Kuril Islands. These islands are under Russian control but are claimed by Japan, a disagreement that has long hindered the two nations from signing a formal peace treaty following World War II.

Russia maintains that its sovereignty over the southern Kuril Islands is indisputable, reiterating its stance amid the broader scope of geopolitical challenges between the two countries. The introduction of the missile systems adds another layer of complexity to their already strained relations.
