Putin Signs Decree to Increase Russian Military to 1.55 Million Troops

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree to increase the number of active-duty personnel in the country’s armed forces by 15,500, bringing the total to 1,550,500 servicemen. This adjustment also raises the overall authorized strength of the Russian military to 2,441,630 personnel. The decision represents the fourth expansion of the military’s authorized size in 2026, following similar increases ordered earlier in March, June, and July.

The decree did not specify reasons for the increase in military personnel. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has suggested that Russia is expanding its recruitment efforts through various channels. In contrast, Russian officials have dismissed claims that they are preparing for a large-scale mobilization.

This latest order focuses on enlarging the authorized size of the armed forces but does not initiate a new mobilization. In September 2022, Russia announced a partial mobilization, but this recent decree does not equate to a similar move.

The expansion reflects ongoing adjustments within the Russian military infrastructure as it responds to various pressures and strategic needs. While speculation about the motivations behind these changes continues, the official stance from Russian authorities remains that the developments are routine and not an indication of immediate military actions.
